Good Morning Everyone....

I hope this note finds you well. A few things to share.....

* For the fifth time in nine years our school's Battle of the Books team captured the city title sponsored by the Barrie Public Library. Battle of the Books is a challenging annual competition which tests local elementary students' knowledge of books and authors. All Barrie and Oro-Medonte schools are invited to join the Battle of the Books challenge in the fall. A booklist, from which all of the questions will be written, is distributed to all Barrie and Oro-Medonte elementary schools. Teams prepare for the battles from the fall to early spring, at which point the competiton takes place. Teams of up to twelve students, from grades four through eight, compete by answering questions about books and authors in 6 different categories. The categories are: Canadian Birch, Canadian Maple, Classics, Fairytales and Folklore, Fun and Fantasy and Award Winning.

Twenty five schools entered the competition this year. Five schools qualified for the "Grand Battle" on April 27 after preliminary round competitions. Our Sabrecat team, St. Monica's, West Bayfield PS, Codrington PS and Hewitt's Creek participated in the final battle. Our team battled hard displaying their incredible reading skills and preparation defeating Codrington in the finals!! Congratulations to the kids and to Mr. Luymes and Mrs. Potts for their leadership.

* Our junior girls' basketball team recently won their area title. They advance to the city championships next week.

* Our junior boys' season is going well too. They begin their playoffs next week.

* Several of our grade 2 students will receive their first Holy Communion on Sunday, May 7 at Holy Spirit Parish. Best wishes to all our families involved for a wonderful Sunday.

* Our last CSCC meeting will take place on Monday, May 8 at 6:30 pm.

* On May 16, all our students will participate in the May celebration of the Rosary Apostolate. This program has been in our school for two years now and its' goal is to nurture a reverence for Mary and to learn how to pray the Rosary.

* On May 19, all our students will participate in a "Walk for Social Justice". The walk will begin at 1:45 pm. Kids will carry banners/placards sharing all of the incredible social justice projects our school has undertaken. We will walk a route around our neighbourhood. All schools in Simcoe Muskoka Catholic will participate with similar walks in their community.

* EQAO Assessments will take place for grade 3 and 6 students throughout the province between May 23 and June 5. These provincial assessments will encompass questions associated with reading, writing and math. There are 6 - 1 hour sessions done over 3 days in the two week window. More details will be sent home to the parents of grade 3 and 6 students next week.

* Friday, June 2 is a professional development day. No classes for students.

As we move toward June, let's hope the temperatures rise and we get a reprieve from all this rain!

Have a great weekend.
