Catholic Education Week May 1 - 6
Published on Apr 30, 2016 13:46

Dear Parents, Guardians and Friends of St. Catherine of Siena Catholic School:

"Opening Doors of Mercy"

We invite all our families to join in celebrating Catholic Education Week 2016, which runs from May 1-6. For more than 160 years, Ontario’s publicly funded Catholic schools have been integrating our faith into all aspects of school life, nurturing the gifts and talents of every student. We celebrate the distinctive contribution that Catholic schools provide, giving thanks and offering our prayers for all those who faithfully journey with our young people each day. For more information about Catholic Education Week visit www.goodnewsforall.ca

At St. Catherine of Siena, we are proud of the many acts of "Mercy" our community has undertaken this school year. Here is a summary of the types of initiatives our school has undertaken  Sept.: We raised over $700 for cancer research (Terry Fox); Oct.: We Scared Hunger by collecting over 1500 pounds of food for the Barrie Food Bank; Dec.: Hot-Diggety Dog!! We raised $1200 for the Syrian refugees; Jan./Feb: We helped the Holy Spirit CWL collect toiletry items, who were able to then make 70 mens, 30 womens, and 18 family sized cloth Valentine gift bags to give to homeless/poor people in our city (the David Busby Street Centre), and 8 boxes of extra toiletries were donated to the Women’s Shelter, Food Bank, and St. Vincent de Paul; April: We have been selling popcorn to raise money for the WHEELS OF HOPE transportation service of the Canadian Cancer Society; Spring Into Clean: we helped to clean up our school yard/neighbouring area.

As you can see, our students are fully engaged in helping others. We are very proud of their sense of justice and remarkable commitment to helping others.

As a school, we will celebrate Catholic Education Week in a number of ways. Here are a few highlights:

Sunday, May 1 - Our grade 2 students will receive the Sacrament of First Holy Communion at Holy Spirit Church. 2:30 pm.

Monday, May 2 -  All our students will celebrate the conclusion of our Rosary Apostolate program with a series of services throughout the day. Please contact your child(ren)'s teacher for the time.

Tuesday, May 3 - Our grade 6, 7 & 8 students will walk to St. Joan of Arc to participate in a "Provincial Mass Day". Weather permitting, approximately 1800 students will be lead in Mass by Cardinal Collins. Across the province of Ontario, hundreds of such Masses will be celebrated to honour our faith and our Catholic Schools in a united way.

Wednesday, May 4 - All classes from grades k-8 will go on a "Social Justice" walk. Beginning at approximately 1:45 pm students will walk with their classes for approximately 45 minutes through our neighbourhood carrying placards which outline the actions our school has undertaken this year to promote social justice. Parents are more than welcome to join their child for this walk.

We are very fortunate to have our Catholic schools.
