Mid December Update
Published on Dec 12, 2017 10:59

Good Tuesday Morning Everyone:

We are receiving what's needed for a traditional Christmas....snow! The kids are pretty excited to see so much falling today.

Here are some updates, events and reminders as we make our way forward. Here they are:

* "Breakfast with Santa" - this community minded event was tremendously successful. We had approximately 320 people attend making it the largest Santa's Breakfast yet. Santa made an appearance, kids had a chance to make a 'gingerbread man' and have their picture taken with St. Nick and vendors displayed some very nice crafts and Christmas wares. A silent auction was held from your donations and money raised will support various charitable causes. What makes this event so special is the amount of volunteers who come forward to help. Catholic School Council members, parents, staff, current and former students and community businesses such as Starbucks all chipped in to make this a real nice gathering. Thank you to all. A special thank you goes out to our CSCC chair, Mr. Joe Zerdin who coordinated this event...the 13th Santa's Breakfast he helped organize. Thank you Joe!

* St. Catherine of Siena Night with the Barrie Colts - this Thursday evening at the BMC (Dec. 14, 7:30 pm vs. Owen Sound) will be our school night. We have sold 134 tickets to our community. Each ticket purchased raises $6 for us. We will have a choir sing the National Anthem at the game. Should be a good night of hockey! Tickets purchased will be coming home with your kids tonight. If you indicated that you'd prefer to pick them up at school, they are ready for you. Thanks.

* Holy Spirit Parish Christmas Concert - On Sunday Dec. 3, our Parish hosted its' Christmas Concert. A large amount of talent was on display by the kids of our Parish and the adult choirs that performed. Our school had a choir perform 4 songs with 26 of our students involved. A huge thank you to Iwona Jaszczur, the music director at Holy Spirit for organizing the concert and working so closely with our St. Cat's kids.

* Congratulations to our senior girls' basketball team who recently qualified for the Simcoe County Basketball championships. The best 16 teams out of approximately 150 schools qualified. Good luck to the kids and to coaches Mr. Cillis and Mrs. Wilson at the tournament.

* Congratulations to our boys' volleyball team coached by Mr. Piitz. Our team did quite well throughout their season and competing in the area championships last week.

* 56 boys in grades 6, 7 & 8 played house league basketball three lunch hours a week through the month of November. Lots of fun was had as the boys competed for the "Golden Bucket" and "edible medals"! Thanks to Mr. D'Ulisse and Mr. Piitz for their hand in organizing the league! Check out our website for more details and a picture of the championship team!

* A reminder that this Thursday is a "hot dog" day at St. Cat's.

* Each Monday of Advent, our students gather in the gymnasium to begin our week by lighting an advent candle, listen to readings designed to help our kids understand the true spirit of Christmas and to sing. Thank you to Mrs. McPhail and her grade 2/3 students for leading us.

* On Dec. 20, some of our grade 1, 2 and 3 classes will be hosting mini Christmas concerts. Looking forward to all the excitement these concerts will bring to us all.

* On Thursday, Dec. 21 we will bus all our students to Holy Spirit Parish for our Advent Mass. The Mass will start at 10:30 am. Please join us if you can....all family and friends of our community are welcome to attend.

* A reminder that our school is located in the "Central Weather" zone for bussing purposes. If our busses are not running on a pizza day or a hot dog day, those meals will be served the next day busses are running. They will not be served on a "snow day".

I think that's it for now. Enjoy the remainder of your week.
