Early March Update
Published on Mar 1, 2018 11:27

Good Morning Everyone....

I hope this note finds you well and enjoying this nice reprieve from cold temperatures and snow! I suspect Old Man Winter's not done with us yet....but we can certainly enjoy the break for a few days at least.

Here are some updates and other pieces of information as we make our way into March:

* Our Ash Wednesday liturgy went very well. Mr. McCracken's grade 6's and Mrs. Sponagle's grade 2 students led our school community in marking the beginning of Lent. It is always nice to see how older students teach their younger schoolmates in these very important occasions....the kids did an excellent job.

Here is an overview of the meaning of Lent given to us by our Board's new faith ambassador:

"Lent is certainly the most “sober”
of the Church’s liturgical seasons. It is
a time of repentance and stark simplic-
ity, when we reflect on our own
weakness and sinfulness—and on how
Christ’s love and mercy continuously
call us to be renewed and transformed,
to become the people God calls us to
be."

Our Easter Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, April 5 at 9:30 am here at our school. Please feel free to join us if you can.

* Many in our community have come to know Mrs. Daphne Vibert who is our night time caretaker. She is one of the most positive and happy people one could meet. Please keep Daphne and her family in your thoughts and prayers as she has just lost her husband after a several month battle with cancer.

* Our intermediate girls' volleyball team and intermediate boys' basketball team begin their playoffs today after very good regular seasons....good luck to our Sabre Cat teams!

* Mr. Piitz is organizing a chess club for girls and boys in grades 4 - 8. Please encourage your child to get involved.....the game is a wonderful problem solving activity involving much strategy and fun!

* Our house league volleyball program just ended after over a month of lunch time matches....volleyball is certainly a strong activity here at St. Cat's judging by the participation rates and skill exhibited.

* Our Battle of the Books club meets each Thursday at lunch. It is an activity that our school has been tremendously successful with over this past decade. It is a yearly event sponsored by the Barrie Public Library which tests kids' abilities to recall book authors, titles and gendres....our school has won this competition 5 times in the past decade which is incredible. A majority of the city schools enters this competition. Please encourage your child to consider joining the club....it's exciting and great for improving their reading skills!

* March Break - the break runs from Monday, March 12 through March 16. Classes reconvene on Monday, March 19.

* Our next Catholic School Community Council Meeting will be held on Monday, March 5 at 6:30 pm in our school library.

* A huge congratulations and well wishes go out to our school's superintendent Mr. Ab Falconi. He has been recently appointed the new Director of Education for the York Catholic District School Board effective April 3, 2018. Mr. Falconi has been a large supporter of our Catholic Schools in Simcoe/Muskoka for 28 years. He has been a great support for our school community and we wish him all the best in his new job.

Let's enjoy the spring.....
